Many people mistakenly believe that potency and alcohol are connected with each other because the latter is an aphrodisiac. However, regular use of alcohol lowers testosterone and may, in fact, reduce libido to zero.
In men, alcohol can cause difficulties with erection emergence and maintenance, while in women it can reduce lubrication excretion and prevent orgasm onset.
If you consume alcohol rarely and moderately, there will not appear any effects, but alcohol abuse adversely affects erection in men for a long time.
It can also damage nerves in penis responsible for erection challenge. This condition is known as “alcohol impotence or alcohol erectile dysfunction.”
Another problem is that alcohol abuse is often accompanied by:
- smoking;
- poor diet;
- lack of exercise.
How Large Amounts of Alcohol Affects Potency
Most men have difficulty with erectile function at some point in their lives. However, these unpleasant “misfire” disappear by themselves, unlike impotence (erectile dysfunction). Impotence has many causes, and alcohol consumption may be one of them.
How does Alcohol Affect Erectile Function and Overall Health?
Alcohol is able to block nerve impulses, through which the brain and body transmit “messages.” This is why drunken people often appear to have:
- slurred speech;
- emotional outbursts;
- the difficulty with walking.
But even a small amount of alcohol affects the nervous system, causing slower reflexes and blurred thinking.
Moderate alcohol consumption (1-2 glasses of any alcohol a day for men) can actually improve the health of the cardiovascular system, according to US Mayo Clinic.
Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to scarring of the liver, the appearance of hypertension symptoms in men and women, as well as an increased risk of some type of cancer.
The study, published in one of the “Indian Journal of Psychiatry” in 2007, showed that scientists have attempted to estimate sexual dysfunction prevalence in a clinical sample of patients with alcohol dependence.
How alcohol affects potency, researchers tried to find out with the help of 100 men such a disorder known as “alcohol dependence syndrome” with uncomplicated cancel state. They were assessed for impotence by means of a list created by using elements of research diagnostic criteria for sexual dysfunction.
The results were as follows:
72% of subjects reported one or more cases of sexual dysfunction:
- premature ejaculation;
- decreased sexual desire;
- deterioration of an erection.
Alcohol consumption was the most significant predictor of sexual dysfunction.
Chronic and persistent use of alcohol causes problems with potency, resulting in a marked deterioration of self-esteem and interpersonal problems. This, in turn, pushes a new wave of alcoholic binges. That’s why people who abuse alcohol and suffer from impotence, need help not only in the form of medicines but also counseling psychologist and sexologist.
